The Barton Community College Forensics Team traveled to Kansas City to compete in the Kansas City Kansas Community College/West Texas A&M University “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” Swing Tournament Oct. 24 and 25 on the KCKCC campus. The event was Barton’s third tournament of the season.
Competing against schools including KCKCC, Kansas State University and Doane College on Saturday, sophomore Dani Bullard, Hoisington, placed fourth in Impromptu Speaking and sophomores Lyle Jones, Seward, and Caitlyn Newkirk, Ellinwood, placed sixth in Duo Interpretation. Sophomore Kris Schneider, Hoisington, placed fifth in Prose Interpretation and was the tournament champion in Program of Oral Interpretation. Overall, Barton earned second place in Community College Team Sweepstakes.
On Sunday, Dani Bullard placed fourth in Impromptu Speaking; Jones placed fifth in Poetry Interpretation; and Schneider took fifth in Prose Interpretation and repeated as tournament champion in Program of Oral Interpretation. These placings earned Barton third place in Community College Team Sweepstakes on Sunday.
“I’m excited for the team’s progress, particularly at the last tournament where everyone who traveled placed in an event,” said Barton’s Forensics Coach Kenny Hopkinson. “We had our first event champion of the year (twice in Program of Oral Interpretation), and collected our first team awards placing in the Community College Team Sweepstakes both days of competition.”
The team next travels to the Blue Dragon Invitational at Hutchinson Community College on Nov. 7 and 8.
Barton’s Forensics Team competed in two tournaments previously this season, traveling to Bethel College in Newton Oct. 10 and 11 and Kansas State University Oct. 3 and 4.
In the Sunflower/Sooner Swing Tournament at Bethel College, Barton competed against colleges including Hutchinson Community College, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Oklahoma. On the first day, Kris Schneider placed sixth in Prose Interpretation and fourth in Dramatic Interpretation. As a college, Barton finished in eighth place out of 16 competing schools.
On the second day, Dani Bullard placed sixth in Impromptu Speaking and the team finished ninth out of 13 schools.
Other competing team members were sophomore Stephen Lingurar, Great Bend; freshman Sara Stacey, Hutchinson; and freshman Wes Young, Kansas City.
Competing in the K-State Speech Unlimited and Alumni Swing Tournament in Manhattan were six of the top 20 schools in the nation, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Kansas State University and Hastings College.
On the first day, sophomores Lyle Jones and Caitlyn Newkirk placed fifth in Duo Interpretation and the team finished in 10th place. Other competing members were Stephen Lingurar, Sara Stacey and Wes Young.
On the second day of the competition, the team was joined by Kris Schneider and finished in a tie for ninth overall.
