Barton Community College will offer Certified Nurse Aide courses for students in three area high schools starting this fall through a Carl D. Perkins Leadership Fund Grant for the project titled "Targeting Technical Talent in the High School."

Students in Ellinwood, Great Bend and Lyons high schools will have the opportunity to enroll in the Certified Nurse Aide Program to earn five college credits and become eligible to take the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Adult Care Home Nurse Aide Examination to become a Certified Nurse Aide.

The course delivery schedule in each high school will be based on the students' needs. Along with the course work, students will be required to complete an intensive clinical practicum in an adult care facility. Barton has longstanding partnerships with area adult care homes to provide the clinical experience.

A Certified Nurse Aide Certificate is a prerequisite to acceptance in Barton's Nursing Program, but CNA students are not limited to a nursing career path, said Penny Zimmerman, Barton's Coordinator of Healthcare and Public Safety Continuing Education. The students in the course may choose a nursing career or select from an unlimited range of careers in allied health.
