Firewalls protect users computers by 
blocking access to computers from outside attacks.
Software - Microsoft XP sp2 and Vista come with a firewall built in. There are several vendors who also sell firewall software.
Hardware - Firewall hardware can be purchased locally or on the internet. A router, with a built in firewall, which can be wireless or wired is one example.
Proxy settings - Only need to be changed if the user is plugging directly into the College network, wireless network users on campus do not need to make any changes to their proxy settings.
How to remove - Most software comes with uninstall instructions, or can be removed by going into Control Panel, Add Remove Programs.
How to purchase - Virus software can be purchased at local stores, or can be purchased and downloaded from the internet.
